Loser eviction a blessing in disguise

THE Biggest Loser house was shocked last night by a dramatic eviction.

Adelaide's Luke Stephens was kicked off the weight loss competition after he smuggled alcohol into the house and went on a drunken binge.

The incident took place at an after challenge celebration and while seven of the other contestants also drank, the Blue Team's Stephens was the only one to take things too far.

It is the first time an incident like this has occurred in the show's seven series.

Shannon Ponton, Blue Team trainer, said he was shattered to see 26-year-old Stephens leave the house.

"I was watching the party on the CCTV cameras and I could see Luke get more and more animated and I thought 'if I didn't know better I would think he was drunk'," Ponton said.

"I addressed him about it the next day and he was absolutely shattered.

"I have never seen a contestant so upset with himself and disappointed in himself.

"Being morbidly obese is a result of more things than just food and for Luke it was the grog."

The trainer of more than 20 years said he fought tooth and nail to keep Stephens in the house but at the end of the day he had broken the rules and after a chat with the show's psychologists they concluded the competition wasn't the best place for him.

"We've been able to get him help on the outside with drug and alcohol counseling and he has lost more weight on the outside than most of the other contestants and he's done it all himself. He looks incredible and I couldn't be prouder of him," Ponton said.

"In the end the incident was a blessing in disguise.

"If he didn't have this breakdown then he wouldn't have had the break through and alcohol would have continued to be a problem for him."

Ponton said Stephens' eviction shattered the other contestants who felt implicit in his exile.

Stephens will still appear at finale but will take no further part in the competition.

Talking about his Blue Team this season, Ponton said it has been a tough year.

"Luke was my powerhouse and he was evicted.

"James took the money and we lost one weigh in and there goes my team," he said.

"Both Hamish and Ryan were two young blokes who had just had the life squeezed out of them.

"I had my work cut out but it gave me an insight into bullying and just how detrimental it can be.

"Hamish went to seven high schools to escape the bullying and I know his parents thought they were doing the best thing for him but it has taught him to run away from pain and discomfort."

Ponton said it was frustrating to have his contestants not do what he asked of them but it was his job as a personal trainer to be patient and have empathy.

"When the contestants are at their worst that is when I need to be at my best," he said.

Of Hamish's relationship in the house with Michelle, Ponton said he was incredibly happy for them.

"He's a little fox - who would have thunk it! Cry-baby Hamish with Michelle!

"He's really pulled out his A-game."

He revealed the pair are still together.

"It's just wonderful to see."

The Biggest Loser airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Ten.
