Looters cut painting and run

A PAINTING made in 1631 has been cut from its frame in an Italian church damaged by earthquakes. It is one of the first examples of significant looting after last month's tremors. Officials are racing to recover artworks from collapsed buildings because important paintings, frescoes and sculptures could be damaged by weather or looted. The double bed-sized Pardon of Assisi by French painter Jean L'Homme would have been too big to take in its frame, so if it is recovered, it will be damaged. It was stolen from Nottoria in central Italy.
