London's mayor on a wire

THE cult status of London mayor Boris Johnson took on a farcical dimension after the popular politician was left dangling on a zip wire 40 metres above the ground at an Olympic festival event at Victoria Park.

Johnson was hoping to celebrate Great Britain's first gold medal with a zip-in, zip-out appearance at the London Live event, where the public can watch Olympic events on big screens, but he was left hanging for about 10 minutes with two Union Jacks in his hands when the 320m-long wire lost momentum.

Amused spectators whipped out their smartphones and posted photographs to Twitter, while Johnson tried to persuade someone to help him.

"Can you get me a rope, get me a rope OK," he said to the crowd below him.

"I think they needed to test this on someone going a bit faster."
