Locals support sporting clubs in lead up to floods

MESSAGES of thanks have flowed thick and fast for volunteers who assisted local sporting clubs in preparing for the floods.

Countless locals banded together to support local sporting clubs as they evacuated club houses in anticipation of severe flooding.

It was a good thing they did, with club houses including that of Football Gympie and the Gympie Cats experiencing flooding to the roof.

Football Gympie president Trevor Kirk said floodwaters at the One Mile Oval engulfed the club house, with the water level going over the roof.

Kirk said it was the third year in a row the club had shifted out in anticipation of the floods.

About 20 people joined Kirk and wife Cheryl to evacuate the football club house on Sunday.

Kirk said volunteers worked from 9am to 4pm moving contents from the club house to higher ground at a nearby residence.

They were able to move the last load of belongings just as water started filling the club house car park.
