LIFE is great in the Sunshine State, even when the south-westerlies turn Mary St into an arctic wind tunnel.

Today we celebrate all things Queensland and commemorate the signing of the Letters Patent by Queen Victoria on June 6, 1859, which authorised Queensland's separation from New South Wales and confirmed its status as an independent colony.

Many communities, like the Cooloola Coast, also use today as an opportunity to acknowledge their outstanding achievers with Queenslander of the Year and community spirit awards.

In Gympie today, Mayor Ron Dyne will cut a commemorative Queensland Day cake at the Gympie library at 10.30am, with a little help from the pre-prep students at Alma St.

Councillor Dyne said yesterday the informal gathering and cake cutting was open to members of the public visiting the library and the Friends of the Library.
