Life sentence for bashing death

A MAN has been sentenced to life in jail for bashing a homeless man to death at Fortitude Valley after the 2009 NRL grand final.

A jury took about four hours to find Aaron Edward Brease guilty of murdering Stephen John Dickson, 53, after a 10-day trial in Brisbane Supreme Court.

Brease was accused of leaving the homeless man in a pool of blood at the corner of Barry Pde and Gotha St in the early hours of October 5, 2009.

Mr Dickson never regained consciousness and died two days later.

Justice Margaret Wilson, in sentencing the 25-year-old to mandatory life in jail on Tuesday, told Brease he showed no remorse.

"It was a vicious and cowardly attack you perpetrated on a defenceless man living rough," he said.

"You took his bag with $5 in it."

The jury saw compelling video footage from cameras throughout the nightclub district.

They also heard he confessed to a friend that he killed "a bum" and he would have to live with it for "rest of my life".

During her opening address, Crown prosecutor Vicki Loury told the jury she would prove Brease's motive was to "rob or simply bash" the homeless man but he intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm.
