Life in prison for Mubarak

ANGRY protesters have staged big rallies in Egypt after a court sentenced former president Hosni Mubarak to life in prison, but acquitted six police chiefs of murder.

Crowds outside the court in Cairo cheered when the chief judge jailed Mubarak for conspiring to kill protesters during last year's uprising against his rule.

But the joy turned to fury when the court acquitted six police commanders, and dropped charges altogether against Mubarak's two sons Alaa and Gamal.

Scuffles broke out between demonstrators and the riot police protecting the complex.

Overnight there were huge crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicentre of last year's protests, and there were more demonstrations in Alexandria and Suez.
