LETTER: Fix Gympie region's dangerous bridges

I read with interest the article on unsafe bridges (Gympie Times 20/04/2016) in the Gympie area.

One that I think should be mentioned (whilst I understand it is a Main Roads bridge) is the bridge over Running Creek on the Broweena to Woolooga Road.

Not only is the bridge on a gravel road, the approaches on either side have both blind and downhill approaches.

Over the last six years, emergency services have attended more than a dozen vehicle crashes on this bridge.

The latest being today where a car went over the side of the bridge, landing upside down with only the rear axle to rear bumper left above the water surface.

Fortunately the occupants (2 adults and 2 children) were able to escape the vehicle.

Some of these accidents have been caused by the drivers incorrectly entering their destination, (i.e. not specifying a Main roads route), which results in them being led off the main highway routes and taken to back roads where these calamities can often occur.

But I think ALL our bridges should be safe enough to travel over, not just the ones on GRC roads.
