Laughter Club a path to good health

FOR more than seven years local residents have been laughing their way to better health at the only laughter club left in the Tweed region.

The Laughter Club, held weekly in Murwillumbah, focuses on laughter, breathing and memory exercises proven to have various health benefits.

Leader and founder of Murwillumbah Laughter Club Cathy Hulme said the club was great for people of all ages, physiques and fitness levels.

Mrs Hulme said since she began the club in 2003 many people who had come through the program had been aided significantly.

“One lady said she was taking depression tablets, she was with me for a couple of years and she said she was able to let the depression tablets go,” she said.

“It's great for lonely people, people who are struggling through marriage problems and different things, and just people who want to come along for a laugh.”

Mrs Hulme said there were many health benefits to laughing she had seen proven many times.

“Every time you laugh it's somewhat like singing; it builds up the immune system,” she said. “It helps with the serotonin in the brain.

“It also opens up your chest and your lungs so you learn to breathe properly.”

Murwillumbah resident Lenore Hosking said she had been attending the club since it first began.

“Straight away the Laughter Club made me feel good about my health and I made great friendships.”
