Late-night shop drops

SELECT retailers are opting to stay open instead of closing at the new time of 7pm for Thursday night shopping at Gympie Centro.

The decision to change the trading hours for late-night shopping has come as retailers battle tough times.

The national chains, such as BigW, Woolworths and Hairhouse Warehouse will remain open until 9pm for customers' convenience.

Those closing up at 7pm were doing so because of dwindling shopper numbers in the period between 7-9pm.

It is believed retailers voted on the reduced opening hours they are required to remain open, as per their contract with Centro Retail.

Despite the general feeling among shoppers that the shopping centre was closing at 7pm, many retailers stayed open and will continue to do so in varying degrees, as are selected retailers in Goldfield's Plaza.

It has been about 10 years since Goldfield's Plaza retailers voted to change the closing time from 9pm to 7pm.

In this case, several businesses still benefit from staying open for the impulse shopper. While the supermarkets remain open, there will always be passing trade to capitalise on.

Historically, customer numbers have not been good for late-night shopping, so the decision was reluctantly made to allow retailers to choose hours outside compulsory hours. Trading on Sunday and past 7pm Thursday nights is up to each retailer.
