Lack of young voters 'shows politics is a turn-off'

A POOR turnout of young voters registering for the Federal Election shows how "disenfranchised and disillusioned" youth are with politics, a member of youth lobby group Australia21 has argued.

The lobby group put the call out for young volunteers to express their views on what matters during the campaign.

University of Western Australia political science graduate Andrew Campbell responded, blaming young dissatisfaction on "a lack of vision" limiting debate and holding "the agenda captive to headline-grabbing slogans".

Mr Campbell's opinion piece came after the Australian Electoral Commission confirmed last week that 400,000 young voters had failed to register, a third of the 1.2 million unregistered voters across the country.

He wrote that vision and leadership was needed to bring young people "back into the fold".

"What we do not need is the lofty rhetoric offered in the past, the promise of transformation and reform without strategy," he wrote.

"The "great moral challenges" of our time will not be solved by words alone."

Mr Campbell wrote that the big issues for young voters were education, health and climate change.

"These are the issues that I hope cut through the personality contests and attack ads," he wrote.

"These are the issues that need to be debated now as they will effect generations of Australians across the 21st century."
