Labor takes Gympie seriously

IT HAS been a long time coming but finally the state Labor Party has seen fit to endorse a local candidate for the seat of Gympie.

Steve Meredith was announced as the Gympie candidate by leader Annastacia Palaszczuk in Mary St on Tuesday.

It was a low key affair but one that should warm the hearts of rusted-on Labor voters.

The last Gympie based candidate was Rae Gate, who stood in 2001 and 2004 before quitting the party and running as an independent because of her opposition to the Traveston Crossing dam.

After Ms Gate's departure it was as if the Labor Party had given up on Gympie, putting up faceless men against Member for Gympie David Gibson.

Mr Meredith has a huge job in front of him to oust Mr Gibson even though he is under fire from other quarters.

The positive thing for Gympie voters is, for the first time in a long while, we have a local Labor candidate to consider on polling day.
