KMART: It's not a yes, but it's not a no

Gympie residents are crying out for a Kmart store, but Kmart has no "firm plans" to come to the party.

We asked readers on social media what store they would like see come to town, and the big K was the most popular choice by far.

Of 99 commenters on our Facebook post, 38 wanted a Kmart store, with JB Hi-Fi coming in second with 13 votes.

We asked Kmart whether they would consider coming to town, but their reply left more questions than answers.

"We are always looking for new locations to bring people our everyday low prices, and that includes Gympie, however at this time we have no firm plans to open a store there," they said.

"If this changes, we'll advise the community with a formal announcement."

Whether that means Kmart is in any way considering opening a Gympie store is unclear.

Even if we don't see a Kmart any time soon, residents would be happy with another cheap clothing store, with commenters hoping for an Ally, City Chic, Supre, Cotton On, Cotton On Kids, Dotti or Valleygirl.

Here are just some of the commenters' requests:

Elisha Nolan: Bring a big kmart to gympie. Long overdue for a good priced store.

Sharon Weston: Sumo Salad shop or an old fashioned style milk bar......... Food court would still get heaps of business

Steven Simpson: JB HI FI would be best in that area I reckon, its just big enough for it and we do need a better DVD and CD store here.

Leanne Bosse: Relocate best n less to centro & then put kmart in its place. Kmart popular & will bring more shoppers to main street

Tegan Flaherty: Valleygirl, JB Hi-Fi, Dymocks/QBD. Something that actually appeals to people under 50

Kris Janke Tipler: JB Hi-Fi would be good, we need an electronics store with a bit more variety than the usual places.
