Killarney football shocked by death of former player

THE Killarney football community has rallied to remember Luke Van de Sande following a tragic accident at the weekend.

The Killarney man was reported to have been crossing Dalrymple Rd in the Townsville suburb of Kirwan with his girlfriend at 10.40pm on Saturday when he was struck by a car.

The 26-year-old was taken to hospital but died of his injuries a short time later.

The Killarney Cutters player was remembered by former teammate Troy Watts as having a "happy-go-lucky spirit."

"The Luke I know was always the life of the party, he always had a smile and when we'd call each other or when he was home for Christmas we'd catch up and always be laughing," Mr Watts said.

"We met about 15 years ago and he was five years younger than me but I thought of him more like a brother.

"I'm speechless, it made my life better having known him.

"I'm just feeling for his family - they've lost a son and the Killarney boys have lost a brother."

Mr Van de Sande had moved north to work as a civil engineer.

Despite the distance, another former teammate described the news of his passing as "devastating".

"I was pretty good friends with him - we played footy together for since we were about 14," he said.

"You don't expect to wake to that sort of news and it's been pretty hard to take, and I only found out through a mutual friend.

"He was just really out going and always so fun to be around.

"I think that's why he was liked by so many, he never had a bad word to say about anyone and everyone got along with him so easily."

"It's really hit hard at home," Mr Watts said.

"I can't really put into words just what I'm feeling, I'm just lost and I'm sure that's the same for so many who knew him.

"Luke was taken far too early but he'll never be forgotten."
