Kids hatching ideas for club

WHILE Gympie Poultry Club president Robert Downing said most poultry clubs were struggling to have 20 members in their ranks, Gympie's junior ranks alone are 20 strong.

With one third of the 60-member club made up by juniors, Mr Downing said it was important to include the younger members' ideas in club meetings as well as pass on skills he has been refining since he started breeding chooks 61 years ago.

Mr Downing, who has been a member of the Gympie club since 1967, said junior members range from five-year-olds to 16-year-olds. The club holds workshops on poultry breeding and showing skills for the young members, with plans to hold a nutrition workshop in the future.
