KATE Garrahy is determined the grinches who have tried to kill the Christmas spirit at her Drayton home will not succeed.

Her home was targeted twice in a week by thieves in the night, which made off with a red solar-powered cherry tree and icicles which Ms Garrahy set up for her two-year-old nephew, Jake.

The first theft happened when Ms Garrahy was sick in hospital and when her mum, Mary-ann Garrahy, broke the news to her, she was devastated.

"Kate put up the lights to make Christmas a little more special for her nephew and to do something nice," Mrs Garrahy said.

"They have taken about $100 in lights.

"They were tied to the trees and pegged securely into the ground, so they have gone to a bit of trouble to get them and take them."

Mrs Garrahy said she reported the matter to police on both occasions but there was nothing they could do.

Instead, the family wrote a message on the empty box and left it in the yard for the thieves, should they return to the home.

"It seems very opportunistic when the lights are taken because it is between about 11pm and 6.30am," Mrs Garrahy said.

"We put them up to add a bit of cheer, but if this is what is going to happen, then we will just do it for ourselves."

Despite the low acts of the thieves, Mrs Garrahy said Christmas would still be a festive occasion for the family.

"This won't ruin Christmas but we might not put the lights out again next year," she said.
