Karate royalty, Sensei Yamazaki. visits Gympie
WORLD renowned karate coach Sensei Kiyoshi Yamazaki visited Gympie's Japan Karate-do Ryobu-Kai academy last month to train Gympie's up-and-coming karate talent.
Sensei Yamazaki, a 9th dan black belt in Shindo Jinen-Ryu Karate-Jutsu and 8th dan in Japan karate, is the chief international instructor of Japan Karate-Do-Ryobu-Kai and ran a seminar in Gympie.
Local coach of Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai Academy Gympie, Noel Turner, a 7th dan black belt, said the seminar went fantastically well with all members enjoying themselves and learning new skills from Sensei Yamazaki.
"We are so privileged to have Sensei Yamazaki conduct a training seminar as he is known worldwide as the grand master of Japan karate do-Ryobu Kai," he said.
"The training was intense for three days in the region and all students learnt something from sensei Yamasaki."
Turner said the seminar included kihon, (basic) jujitsu, (self-defence) kumite, (sparing) and kata training by Sensei Yamazaki.
For people who don't know, Sensei Yamazaki has had a very interesting career in karate.
His expertise in the martial arts has even attracted the attention of Hollywood.
He has served as a technical adviser, instructor - and even a performer - in several movies, while teaching and displaying swordplay that entertains while maintaining technical integrity.
Under Sensei Yamazaki's, Arnold Schwarzenegger became a true student of the sword, as evident in Conan the Barbarian (1982), Conan the Destroyer (1984) and Red Sonya (1985).
In 1970, Sensei Yamazaki was chosen to serve on the committee to select the US karate team that would participate in the first World Karate Tournament in Japan.
Today, in addition to teaching at his dojo in Anaheim California, Sensei Yamazaki maintains a busy schedule promoting the philosophy of Shindo Jinen Ryu and supervising and developing all the schools of Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai outside of Japan.
