KAP MP calls for state to stand against 100% FIFO workforce

A KATTER'S Australian Party MP has called on central and northern Queensland to band together against 100% fly-in, fly-out mining workforces.

Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth, whose electorate includes Moranbah and west of Mackay, said people needed to work together to save "dying towns".

He said FIFO should only be an option offering workers a choice where to live - not a requirement.

Mr Knuth said a possible 100% FIFO workforce at Adani's proposed $14 billion Galilee Basin mine, coupled with 100% FIFO at Caval Ridge and Daunia mines in the Bowen Basin would be devastating.

"Our communities have been smashed because of past 100% FIFO arrangements," he said.

More FIFO news

Mr Knuth said he had seen firsthand the social and economic effects 100% FIFO had on the electorate.

"Businesses are closing down, motels are empty and little towns like Dysart and Moranbah have more than 300 vacant homes," he said.

"Yet our local school leavers cannot get a job in surrounding mines unless they live in Brisbane or Cairns.

"The encouragement of 100% FIFO is contributing to the decimation of rural and regional Queensland."

Mr Knuth also condemned some northern urban centres for offering themselves up as service points for 100% FIFO.

A group in southern Queensland, hundreds of kilometres away from the mines, stated in its written submission to the Queensland Government's current FIFO inquiry that its region had a pool of 28,000 potential FIFO workers.

The group, Regional Development Australia Wide Bay Burnett, has also implemented an IM4FIFO campaign and completed several FIFO-related studies.

The inquiry will hold regional public hearings in June and a report is due at the end of September.
