Junior league ready to fire up

GYMPIE Junior Rugby League Club spokesman Eric Ellems says the club is hitting the new season at full speed this weekend.

Kicking into gear is the Under 7-12 mini mods competition at Jack Stokes Oval.

The games will begin tonight at 5.30pm and junior league players will be getting the first of many grass stains on their brand new NRL jerseys.

The first game to hit the field will be a blockbuster between the Broncos and Cowboys.

Ellems said the first month would feature Friday night games as something different for players and spectators.

“We will play a special pre-season competition for a month, consisting of six teams and nine-a-side,” Ellems said.

The decision to play the special carnival was to allow time for more players to jump on board when normal games resumed each Sunday.

Meanwhile, Gympie Junior Rugby League is still chasing more players to sign up for the debut Junior Joeys program.

The program has been newly unveiled by the Gympie league club and is for players aged five and six, boys and girls.

Designed to offer a fun introduction to the sport, children will learn the fundamentals of the game before applying their skills in a series of lighthearted games under modified rules and supervision.

Players wanting to get involved in Junior Joeys or the Under 7-12 mini mods competition can contact Eric Ellems for further information on 0427 616 259.
