Junior teams close in on finals

TWO Gympie Cats junior AFL teams are braced for battle this weekend in a bid to close in on grand final glory.

Both the Gympie Cats Under-12 Division 1 and Under-14 Division 2 sides will feature in semi final action.

The Under-12 Division 1 side travels away to play Maroochydore for a finals berth while the Under-14 Division 2 outfit has a battle lined up against Pomona.

Gympie Cats Club spokesperson Rob Kelly was brimming with high expectations for the sides.

“Both teams have been playing outstanding this season so if that form holds, I see no reason why they can’t go all the way,” he said.

The Under-12 Division 1 team is captained by Joel Perry-Warren, a Queensland representative with plenty of experience.

Backing Perry-Warren up is Hayden Izod, nicknamed ‘Ipod’ by his team mates. Izod is the Sunshine Coast Under-12 leading kicker with 40 goals in what has been a stellar season.

Meanwhile, the Under-14 Division 2 team finished the regular season third on the ladder and is captained by Tin Can Bay’s Jack Clouston – yet another Gympie Queensland representative.

“There’s a lot of talent in both sides and the club will be cheering them on this weekend in the hope they advance,” Kelly said.

In other Gympie junior AFL news, the Cool Cats Junior Competition continues to soar to new heights.

After a successful two years helping to shape the future talent of the game, the competition will expand next season to include a separate Under-8 and 10 competition.

Another big change for the young players will be inclusion of a new team in honour of the Gold Coast Suns – a new entry into national competition.

“There has been so much support for the competition the decision to expand was really easy,” Kelly said.

“The club has been really focused on making the competition a success and the support from the public has been great.”
