Johnson claims top tour award

GOLF: American Dustin Johnson has capped off a sensational season by being named the PGA Tour's player of the year.

Johnson had a career-best three wins on the tour in 2015-16, including a breakthrough first major championship after a couple of heart-breaking near misses.

The world No.2's US Open triumph at Oakmont Country Club in June was the highlight in a year when he also won the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and BMW Championship.

Johnson beat Australian world No.1 Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and British Open champion Henrik Stenson to the honour.

In a breakout year, 32-year-old Johnson had a tour-best 15 top-10 finishes and made 21 cuts.

He also was top of the FedEx Cup standings going into the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta before a final-round 73 allowed McIlroy to win the $US10 million bonus.

Johnson took the Arnold Palmer Award as the tour's leading money winner ($US9.4 million) and claimed the Byron Nelson Award for adjusted scoring average (69.172).
