Jobless rate steady, hiring 'cautiously optimistic'

AUSTRALIA'S unemployment rate held steady at 6.2% last month after the Australian Bureau of Statistics was forced to revise the jobless rate from the previous month because it botched the figures.

The ABS said the total number of jobs created had risen 24,100 to 11,592,200 from a revised September estimate, but unemployment had increased 7100 to 772,100.

The bureau said full-time employment had increased 33,400 to 8,058,500 and part-time employment had decreased 9400 to 3,533,700.

Randstad employment market analyst Steve Shepherd said on Thursday the figures showed employers were taking a cautiously optimistic approach to hiring.

"We are continuing to see fluctuations in part-time, contract and temporary jobs as organisations look for more flexible approaches to meet current demands," he said.

"Employers often use flexibility to 'test the waters', bringing someone on temporarily, and once they have seen consistency and results in their business, they transition to permanent, full-time jobs."
