Rowling's adventure retold in telemovie

EVERY 30 seconds someone starts reading Harry Potter.

Poppy Montgomery remembers when she first discovered the world of wizardry.

She said she disappeared into her room for a week - that was more than 10 years ago.

Fast-forward to 2013 and the Australian-born actress is playing the writer herself, Joanne Rowling, in Magic Beyond Word: The J.K. Rowling Story.

Montgomery, 37, who moved to Los Angeles when she was 18, said she didn't need to re-read the books or watch the films again to jog her memory.

"She is really extraordinary. (I am a) fan of her, her life and books," Montgomery said.

Magic Beyond Word: The J.K. Rowling Story - Universal Channel - Saturday, March 16 at 7.30pm Qld, 8.30pm NSW.

Magic Beyond Word is an unauthorised telemovie based on the life of Rowling, who is now one of the wealthiest women in the world.

The film starts with the British author's modest upbringing and stint on welfare, and follows her rise to fame and wealth as the author of the beloved Harry Potter children's books.

Montgomery said despite Rowling not being involved in the film, she believed it depicted her life respectfully.

The former Sydneysider said she didn't know whether or not Rowling had seen the film, but she would understand if she didn't enjoy watching her life through the eyes of another.

"(I have) no idea - I don't want to know," the Unforgettable and Without A Trace star said.

"I am scared. She is amazing and extra

ordinary. I hope the story had an impact on her."

Montgomery has come a long way since moving to the US as a teen in search of a career in Hollywood, armed with a copy of the book How to Make it in Hollywood.

Having read about Julia Roberts' first manager, she tracked him down and after much persistence, he finally agreed to introduce her to an agent.

Soon after, Montgomery was a guest-star in NYPD Blue and Party of Five.

Montgomery is currently on leave from her regular gig as the lead in Unforgettable, which is filmed in New York, as she is heavily pregnant.

She said she was looking forward to meeting her new bub and so was her five-year-old son Jackson and her beau, Shawn Sanford.

Montgomery said despite what people say, "you can't really juggle motherhood and a career in Hollywood".

"You just keep it all going," she said.

"I have a lot of support. All mothers who work a lot know it is a constant struggle to balance everything - there really is no equal balance."

Montgomery said she would be starting her new baby on Vegemite early because her son won't eat it.

The star said her mum sent over supplies of Aussie treats that she couldn't get in the US.

"I miss all the Australian food and places," she said.
