Jim bowls 'em over yet again

GYMPIE cricket stalwart Jim Geiger added to his already impressive list of achievements on the weekend when he was named Volunteer of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards at Twin Waters.

Mr Geiger, whose involvement with Gympie cricket started in 1946, was presented the award in front of more than 370 guests who gave him a standing ovation when he was announced the winner.

"I suppose if you enjoy doing something. you just keep doing it," Mr Geiger said.

"The highlight of the night for me was going to get the award, when the MC announced all the things that I had done, he then asked me to make a speech, I had the crowd cackling a bit."

Mr Geiger was the founding president of Wests Cricket Club in Gympie and served in that role for over 60 years.

Wests president Scott McIntosh, who was present at the award ceremony, said "Jim was the star attraction".

"When Jim was announced as the winner, the whole crowd stood up and applauded him, it was unbelievable. The younger people on the night were amazed with him.

"There were over 370 people and they all stood and clapped him," McIntosh said.

"He loves the sport of cricket.

"There have been battles to keep cricket going in town but Jim has been there through the hard times and the good times, it is an outstanding achievement."

The award follows a big 12 months for Mr Geiger who had the honour of receiving a service to Queensland sport award for his cricket and community involvement in Brisbane last year.

The Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards aim to acknowledge outstanding achievements within the local and Sunshine Coast sporting communities.
