Stringer’s emotional hope for game 100
AN emotional Jake Stringer hopes to run out with his young daughters Milla and Arlo for his 100th game in Saturday night's Dreamtime at the 'G clash with reigning premiers Richmond.
After a tumultuous past year and a half in which he separated from partner Abby Gilmore, lost his 2015 All-Australian form and was traded out of the Western Bulldogs at the end of last year, Stringer admitted today he had matured a lot from his experiences.
He also stressed that Essendon now felt like home for him, and he now wanted to do everything in his power to become a better player for the sake of the side.
"My kids Milla and Arlo … haven't been able to watch me play this year, so fingers crossed, I can run out with them on Saturday night, and have a very special moment with them," Stringer said.
"That is something that hopefully will get done and hopefully I can enjoy it with them."
Asked if it was guaranteed to happen, Stringer said it was "pretty likely" his daughters would be there, saying they "mean the world to me."
"They are my whole world, so having them there and to be able to run out with them, and give them a hug and a kiss and to be able to spend time with them after the game will be good."
Stringer admitted at times he struggled with the off-field attention and how it impacted on his confidence and form.
But he stressed that he was once more learning to love the game after the Bulldogs' 2016 premiership descended into a nightmare 2017 season.
"Everyone goes through their struggles in life, and I have had mine," he said. "But I feel like I am in a good place now, and I think it is starting to show on the footy field. I am starting to enjoy my footy again, which is something I have probably missed over the last couple of years."
He wasn't fazed when AFL great Wayne Carey called for him to be dropped three weeks ago after the Bombers' shock loss to Carlton. However, some good form over the past fortnight following some extra time in the middle has not only locked in his position within the team, but given him a renewal of confidence.
