Jack Frost pays us a chilly visit

GYMPIE'S early morning walkers felt the many-bladed knife of winter yesterday when the mercury bottomed out just below zero.

Jack Frost turned Gympie lawns, paddocks and parks into a winter wonderland as the region shivered through its coldest morning yet this year, with an official Bureau of Meteorology reading of minus 0.1 degrees - 7.5 degrees below the average.

The coldest August morning on record for Gympie was minus 1.8 degrees in 1977.

The BoM says Gympie should have another cold and frosty morning today, with the mercury expected to hit 0 again.

Chilly mornings and fine, sunny winter days are predicted to stick around through until at least Wednesday.

Tomorrow morning, at this stage, is expected to get down to 2 degrees.
