Is mining Gympie’s saviour?
NEWS of the possibility of a manganese mine being given the green light 15km south-west of Gympie will give locals plenty to think about. There are many positives to come from mining the Gympie region. The biggest is jobs and the massive injection of cash into our economy.
Gympie has been hit hard this week.
The loss of 67 jobs, just before Christmas, after truck-trailer manufacturer, J Smith and Sons, closed it doors has been a low blow.
Gympie is in dire need of employment opportunities and mining may well be a welcome tonic. But the downside to mining, especially in a place like the Mary Valley, is the environmental concerns. Many in our community have fought to save the Valley from the proposed Traveston Crossing dam. Mining may be the next big fight.
Let's hope if mining does go ahead it is done in a fashion to preserve our unique environment.
