Insurance giant misses Gympie in flood claim data
GYMPIE businesses must be hoping that not everyone misreads yesterday's Suncorp data on flood damaged communities, as Suncorp itself seems to have done.
Gympie does not rate a mention on the major insurance company's list of "the ten Queensland suburbs hardest hit by ex-tropical cyclone Oswald," partly because that is not what the list really is.
Suncorp lists relatively unscathed Brisbane suburbs like Kenmore and Stafford as hard hit by floods, but does not mention Gympie at all, despite widespread damage.
A closer reading of the Suncorp statement appears to show that it is based on insurance claims.
This would not include regular flood zones, like Gympie, where flood insurance is not generally available, despite widespread flooding.
The Suncorp announcement says insurance claims could reach $220 million.
