Poole's ambitions on hold

MOOLOOLABA ironman Matt Poole is determined to dig his foot into the sand during the 2012-13 Nutri-Grain Series season, despite suffering a knee injury that could rule him out of training for months.

Poole, 23, will undergo surgery today to repair a torn ligament in his left knee.

He suffered the injury on Saturday when he "stepped funny" while training with clubmate Josh Minogue.

He had hoped to compete in the prestigious Molokai 2 Oahu paddleboard race in Hawaii in July but conceded those plans had been scuttled.

He was unsure yesterday how the injury would affect his 2012-13 campaign but hoped it would not dampen his push for a maiden series title.

"This time tomorrow night I might have a bit of a sit down and work out how I'm going to progress and recover," he said.

"I'm just going to have to take it day by day.

"These are the cards I've been dealt. Hopefully I can get out there this season."

Poole said he was dejected at missing out on the 42km Molokai 2 Oahu race. He had pencilled it in as a major goal for the season after competing in the teams' event last year.

"I was really looking forward to it," he said.

Besides Gold Coast-based reigning champion Jamie Mitchell there was a good field going over this year, Poole said.

"I'd love to be going over and conquer it solo, but I guess that's on hold," he said.
