Icy May morning

SHIVERING through a chilly Sunday morning, some Gympie residents probably thought winter had finally come.

But we still have four days until June 1, the first official day of winter.

The Weather Channel meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said an icy chill made Saturday night the coldest in almost two decades in parts of the south-east.

Sunday's two degrees at 6.30am was the coldest in this region for May.

But some of the significant overnight minimum temperatures in the state were minus 2.3 degrees at Roma Airport, a freezing 11 degrees below the average.

Thangool had its coldest May night for six years with 0.1 degrees and the Sunshine Coast Airport endured its coldest May night for more than 17 years with 3.5 degrees.

Yesterday, the mercury dipped to 5.5 degrees at 5.30am in Gympie and Saturday morning was mild in comparison with 10.2 degrees at 7am.

The cold snap is over for now.

Mr Hanniffy said an area of high pressure drifting across southern parts of Australia would bring a general rise in temperatures across the state in the coming days.
