Byron Bay Triathlon expected to draw 1000 competitors

ORGANISERS expect more than 1000 entries to flow in for the 20th annual Byron Bay Triathlon.

To be held on May 9, the event usually attracts a strong contingent of local, national and international competitors.

The long-running affair, which has traditionally been the last race in the New South Wales and Queensland triathlon calendar, has quite the history - former champions include two-time Olympian Courtney Atkinson, two-time World Triathlon champion Emma Carney, and two-time Ironman world champion Chris McCormack.

Competitors at the event will take on a 1.5km ocean swim in the waters off Byron Bay, a 40km cycle through cane fields, rainforests and coastal environments and a 10km run through the streets of the tourist mecca.

The team category, always a strongly-contested competition, was expected to attract triathlon clubs and corporate groups from across Australia to compete in a relay or total-average-time format.

Children haven't been left out, with the Byron Coastal Aquathon to be held for kids aged seven and 15.

Race director Mike Crawley, from QSM Sports, has been busy organising the iconic race.

"We hope to see both familiar faces as well as new competitors in the upcoming event," he said.

"We encourage participants to make a weekend of it and enjoy an iconic event in this pristine location."
