Ian Walker the newest minister in Newman's cabinet

A FORMER lawyer will lead the Queensland Government's science, information technology and arts agenda, after Premier Campbell Newman made a new Cabinet appointment yesterday.

Premier Newman said Ian Walker, the Member for Mansfield, would be promoted to Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts.

Mr Newman said Mr Walker was instrumental in cutting red tape in planning regulations to help empower local government decisions when he was an Assistant Minister.

"As Minister, Ian will play an important role in overseeing initiatives to drive the arts sector across the state and ensure the arts is accessible for all Queenslanders," he said.

Mr Walker will now drive the government's full audit of information technology, as well as take on responsibility for the arts portfolio.

The Premier also announced two other new appointments, with Member for Southport Rob Molhoek to be promoted to Assistant Minister for Planning Reform and Member for Mt Ommaney

Tarnya Smith to become Assistance Minister for Child Safety.

Mr Molhoek is a former Gold Coast Councillor and has a background in small business, while Ms Smith was a mother of three and also had experience in small business.
