Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga has called for player names to be included on the back of club jerseys as they are in State of Origin each year.

Ponga took to Instagram to plead his case in referencing basketball players Lamelo Ball and Carmelo Anthony trading their jerseys after an NBA game.

"NRL put names on the back of our jerseys," Ponga wrote on his Instagram story.

Swapping jerseys post match has become a regular occurrence in the NBA.

The practice was also common place in rugby league in the old days, especially at Origin level and in International rugby league.

However one of the roadblocks to putting names on the back of jerseys in the NRL is the amount of changes to each team every week due to injuries and late selection calls.

Given that each club picks their 21 man squad by Tuesday afternoon that gives the jersey manufacturers precious little time to change jersey numbers from then until the first game of the round, which is on Thursday night.

While it would be costly to give players another jersey with their name on it every week, the commercial incentive for merchandising would make sense, according to Katie Brown.

"Even if it is a merchandising gimmick, it's making money," Brown said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

"I'm sure there would be so many people wanting a Kalyn Ponga jersey with his name on the back."

Fox League's Andrew Voss also believes the positives outweigh the negatives when it comes to the proposal of putting player names on jerseys.

However it may mean having to have exclusive numbers for players like in the NBA rather than 1-21 each week, according to Voss.

"I think there's more pluses than minuses to it," Voss said.

"We have it in Origin, they put the names on the jersey.

"It would be expensive in the NRL, that jersey would be exclusive to the player, but we're a professional sport, I think we can cover it."
