Hundreds take anti-porn pledge in Civic Square

ABOUT 250 men attended an anti-porn rally in the Civic Square today and swore not to watch pornography.

Letitia Shelton, who helped organise the event, hailed it as a success in what she admitted was an uphill battle against porn.

The City Women Toowoomba chief executive officer said the issue of pornography was taboo and praised the courage of those who took a stand.

She said Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio spoke  about what she has described as a scourge against society.

One man, David Willadsen, spoke about being addicted to pornography for 13 years, the impact it had on his life and how he viewed women as sexual objects.

Another speaker, Julienne Doran, spoke about how her partner had been addicted to porn and the abuse she received.

Ms Shelton said both accounts were courageous and inspiring.

The pledge acknowledged that porn harms women, families and society and the men promised not to look at it.

Ms Shelton said porn was pervasive in society, in outdoor advertising, music videos and magazines.

She said her group planned to keep working on the community to bring greater awareness and education about porn.

"We'll work with key community leaders and get ready for next 50 years of battle.

"There are people who think we're crazy, however when there is such clear research on the harms and the stories - you can't deny the impact it's having.

"The fight will go on."
