HUNDREDS of Sunshine Coast school leavers have descended on Mooloolaba Beach during Friday's scorching weather to celebrate the end of at least 12 years of schooling.

As a rescue helicopter hovered overhead and police patrolled the beach, Year 12 graduates ran screaming into the water for the annual rite of passage.

Nambour Christian College students were among those who dunked themselves in their school uniforms along with students from neighbouring state and private colleges.

Huge groups of students screamed, sang, surfed waves and played football as their proud parents watched on.

At schools across the Coast, final assemblies were held and students were given milestone send-offs featuring younger students forming guards of honour for the graduating class of Year 12.

At Nambour Christian College, primary school students formed a line along a long pathway up the hill out of the college.

A single police officer gave the young students high fives as he ensured a clear pathway for the convoys of P-plates driven by Year 12 students.

As students drove by there were more high fives from passengers to the young students in the honour formation.

They then headed to the beach, joining a traffic snarl on Brisbane Road as hundreds of school leavers and parents did the same.
