Horse struck by lightning in Gympie storm

A HORSE was struck by lightning in Gympie last night in the storm that dumped golf ball sized hail on Kingaroy.

The horse is believed to have in a paddock near Old Goomboorian Rd when it was struck in the highly electrical storm which hit Gympie about 6pm on Monday, bringing strong wind gusts and some reports of hail.

A severe storm warning was issued for Cherbourg and parts of the Gympie, Dalby, South Burnett and Toowoomba Council Areas before the storm struck.

 

At 6:25 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near the area northeast of Dalby.

The thunderstorms were moving towards the northeast adn were forecast to affect the area northeast of Kingaroy, Bell, Wondai and Cherbourg by 6:55 pm and Bunya Mountains, Murgon and Goomeri by 7:25pm.

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones were likely.
