Homicide squad works with strikeforce on fatal shooting
A 40-YEAR-OLD man killed in a bizarre incident that unfolded at Dundurrabin on Thursday was a resident of the Dorrigo plateau.
In addressing media on details of the fatal shooting, Coffs Clarence Crime Inspector Detective Senior Sergeant Peter O'Reilly confirmed the man did not, however, live at the Armidale Rd property, which was yesterday being treated as a crime scene.
The woman, 37, who is assisting police with their investigations into the shooting death flagged down officers following a crash on the Armidale Rd on Thursday.
Police discovered the man's body in the rear tray of the crashed ute the woman had been driving.
As mystery surrounded the case yesterday amid ongoing police investigations, officers revealed the vehicle at the crash scene had been seized for forensic examination along with two other vehicles at a nearby Armidale Rd property, where a second crime scene remained under investigation yesterday.
The 37-year-old was arrested by police and interviewed by detectives but was released late on Thursday night and yesterday continued to assist police.
Ammunition has been seized from the property but police said a weapon had not been located and ballistic examination is under way into the make and calibre of the firearm.
The timeline of the incident began on Thursday about 2.30pm when emergency services were called to the scene of a car crash on the Armidale Rd at Dundarrabin.
"A short time later (officers) have been flagged down by a female in a utility and we discovered at that stage there was a male deceased in the rear of the utility," Senior Sgt O'Reilly said.
"A crime scene was established at that place and through further investigation over the next few hours we were able to link a further crime scene at a residence on the Armidale Rd at Dundarrabin and when forensic police also attended it was established the male also had a gunshot wound to his torso.
"We have examined the vehicle in which the male was discovered in and we have ongoing investigations at the residence."
Strike Force Lawrencium has been established by detectives from Coffs/Clarence Police District to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
Local detectives are being assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.
Anyone with information that may help in the investigation is urged to contact police.
