Homeless man gets bail after everything goes up in flames

A HOMELESS man has been granted bail despite his mode of transport, which also doubled up as his temporary home, going up in smoke on Thursday.

Ivan Horvatic appeared in the dock of the Bundaberg Magistrates Court today were he was facing four new charges including trespass and lighting an unauthorised fire.

Horvatic is accused of lighting a fire on the corner of Johnston and Bolewski St about 10am on Thursday.

Horvatic allegedly started the fire using a tissue which he dropped thinking the wind would extinguish the flame before throwing a towel over the top of it and igniting a larger blaze.

Police prosecutor Dean Burgess objected to Horvatic being granted bail.

Sgt Burgess told the court the fires were the more serious offences.

"We are in the midst of a drought, there is a severe fire risk and it is known," he said.

"It was dry as can be and he didn't just light one, he lit two … the fortunate thing is those fires were extinguished, they were burning towards a school.

"He lost his only means of transport and his only home … it has to be seen as serious because if it can engulf his vehicle, what else can it engulf?"

Horvatic was represented by the duty lawyer for the day.

Sgt Burgess tendered Horvatic's lengthy criminal history which was seven pages long.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan asked if Horvatic would be in a position to be able to report to police twice a week.

His lawyer advised that he could stay with a friend in Bargara.

Ms Hartigan didn't impose a condition of his bail that he had to reside at a fixed address.

"I can't punish him for being homeless," she said.

Horvatic was granted bail and must report to the Bundaberg Police Station twice a week.

His is due to appear in court again on October 28.
