First Home Owner grant should be for all homes, say buyers

LIKE many young couples, Sam Heisner and Ellie Meuwissen would love to buy their first home.

But because they are looking for a property to renovate instead of a new home, they don't qualify for the First Home Owner grant.

This could change if the State Government buckles to pressure calling for the grant to be reinstated for existing homes as well as new homes.

Mr Heisner, a civil engineering student at the University of the Sunshine Coast, has been looking for a home in the Maroochydore area for six months.

He and his fiancée Miss Meuwissen didn't realise it would be so hard with their $450,000 budget.

Their agent, Jason Mills from Ray White Maroochydore, said they were being "pipped at the post".

"There is so much competition ... they get pipped for the money. I don't think the First Home Owner's grant (for new homes) has had much impact, it needs to be for all homes," he said.
