Home and Life Expo to bloom
GREEN thumb Genevieve Humble-Crofts will be a flower lover’s best friend at The Gympie Times Home and Life Expo, on today and tomorrow.
Genevieve and husband Tim own Humble Flowers, producing gerberas for the cut flower market as well as potted commercial gerberas for home gardeners who want to grow their own prolific producers.
Genevieve started growing beautiful blooms on their McIntosh Creek farm a couple of years ago.
“I decided to grow gerberas because they are my favourite flower,” she said.
“They’re bright and happy, and grow all year round, which makes them good for all occasions.”
Genevieve and Tim now have two greenhouses filled with thousands of beautiful plants.
The couple sell their stock to wholesalers on the Sunshine Coast, to Gympie florists and at the Southside and Jones Hill corner stores.
“Tim does all of the hard work,” Genevieve said, “all the maintenance stuff, and we both pick, bunch and deliver each week.” Humble Flowers also supplies gerberas for weddings and other special occasions.
“We enjoy the fact that people like buying straight from the farm and within their community,” she said.
“(We) have the advantage of picking and delivering the same day to local customers so they are as fresh as people can get them, which means they will last longer, given the right care.”
Humble Flowers is one of about 70 site holders at the Gympie Showgrounds’ Pavilion this weekend for the expo.
They’ll be selling potted commercial gerbera plants which, kept in their pots and looked after, will supply flower lovers with copious amounts of fresh blooms.
“There’ll be about 10 to 15 colours and we’ll also be selling coco coir (a growing medium),” Genevieve said.
“And I’m happy to share my knowledge and growing experience with people.”
