Hockey teams battle out finals

THE first Gympie men’s hockey competition in more than ten years will end tonight when Gympie Regional Realty plays Koolawong Par 3 for the title.

Last week first placed Koolawong Par 3 beat fourth placed Brad Adams Construction 2-1 to advance to the final.

In the other knockout final Gympie Regional Realty upset favourites Gympie Fulllife Pharmacy 3-1.

Pharmacy were without a few players for the first half and Gympie Regional Realty took an unassailable lead to win the game.

Regional Realty will need to be on top of their game tonight if they are to beat the inform Koolawong.

Koolawong has been the competition front runners all year.

A good mix of youth and experience has served the maroon team well.

Gympie Regional Realty striker Dean Walker will have to his radar on tonight if they are to trouble Koolawong.

He, Scott Reedman and Jordon Warhurst will have to combine well if they are to win.

Koolawong will look to Nathan Stephens to score and Neil McKean to make sure the backs are in position.

Craig Mylrea from the Empire Hotel has come on board to sponsor the men’s hockey finals this year.

The publican is generously supplying trophies and meal vouchers to the players of the winning team.

“The five teams have been very close all year,” Wenzel said.

“It has been great to see so many players back at the Gympie Hockey Centre.”

Wenzel also thanked Craig Mylrea from the Empire Hotel and all of the other sponsors for their generous support for the game during the year.

“It is people like Craig that will help us grow and build the game,” he said.

Wenzel said the men’s and ladies’ competition should be bigger and better next year once the new synthetic surface is put down at Ramsey Park.

He said all the preliminary work was about to start on the field and the new surface should be in position before Christmas.

“We have done a lot of research before selecting the new field and will have a top class facility.”

Wenzel also reminded people to get their TSR medal night tickets as soon as possible.

The Heat’s best and fairest presentation will be held on October 16. Tickets are $30 and include a three course meal, entertainment. They need to be purchased before the end of September. Anyone wanting a ticket can call Ben Fitzpatrick on 0427720563.
