AFTER the most successful sign-on in years, especially in the senior ranks, hockey trial matches are set to start with enthusiasm at Ramsey Park this week.
The next two weeks will be trial games to confirm teams before serious competition gets underway after the Easter holidays.
Trial games are designed to assess the make-up of teams and make adjustments if necessary, giving hockey selectors a chance to see how new players perform, so teams can be balanced to ensure a solid and competitive competition.
Thursday night will see the first men’s competition in years kick-start their new season at 6.30pm.
Youth teams will start on Friday at 4pm, with the women’s competition following at 6.30pm.
Junior hockey starts on Saturday with Hook into Hockey at 9am and following through with under-9s at 10.05am, under-11s at 11am and then under-13s at 12.15pm.
After rain put a dampener on the first junior training, sessions are now under way each Wednesday from 3.45pm to 5pm.
Training will continue at this time each Wednesday afternoon throughout the season except for school holidays.
Representative training has also started for the under-13 and under-15 boys with all boys in these age groups encouraged to attend training from 5.30pm to 6.30pm each Tuesday afternoon followed by Heat training at 6.30pm where any youth division boys are welcome to attend.
Under-13 girls representative training will start on March 24 at 5pm which is straight after normal Wednesday training to make it easier for most families.
Parents of under-13 girls are encouraged to attend a meeting after the first trial game on Saturday to organise and discuss team requirements.
Please check your Gympie Times on Thursdays or the Gympie Hockey website each week for the hockey draw.
