'Old girls' ready for the cold

THE temperature at this weekend’s State Veteran Women’s Championships in Warwick is expected to hit zero degrees, but luckily our Gympie girls will be snug as bugs in a rug with new jackets sponsored by Masondale Heavy Haulage.

The girls received the jackets at their last training run and are ready to join 50 other teams from around the state at the carnival.

The girls have jumped a division this year to division five after making the final of division six last year.

They leave for Warwick on Friday ready for three days of hockey action and have high hopes of making the final for the second year.

Women’s coach Dave Dixon said there would be no second chances for the team with the winner of each pool playing off in the final on Monday.

“Each game is a must win,” Dixon said. We want to masters of our own destiny. All games will be tough, none more so than the opener against Toowoomba.

“I think we have the team to give the opposition a good shake. It will all come down to team work and keeping the intensity level up the whole weekend.”
