Hills tough for female winner

THE first female to cross the finish line, the Sunshine Coast's Jacqui Pennings, paced herself well over Race the Rattler's 18.5km to finish in a speedy 1hr 22min 32sec.

Pennings said the race was difficult but she was happy with her time.

"I decided to go out as fast as I could for as long as I could," Pennings said.

"The hills made it really tough."

She said the support from the cheering crowds, both aboard the train and at points along the course, helped her push through the pain.

"The cheering gave me the urge to push on," Pennings said.

Pennings said she had always been a runner, but had really knuckled down with her training during the past two years.

The pocket rocket said she'd competed in Race the Rattler a few years ago.

However, the winner said her increased fitness had helped her claim victory this year.
