True love for formal proposal teens
WHEN two students who met at the Summerland Christian College got engaged at a high school formal in Lismore last year, onlookers thought it was just for show.
But for the couple, who are now happily married, it was true love.
Uni student Nick Daley, now 20, surprised last year’s graduating class from the Goonellabah college when he proposed to his girlfriend, Nikki Daley (now 19), at her end-of-year formal.

The Goonellabah couple starred on the front page of The Northern Star the next day.
Nikki said the initial shock of the surprise engagement took a few months to subside.
“I was still in shock for the few months afterwards and I kept looking at the ring on my hand,” she said.
The couple, who are both studying primary education at Southern Cross University, took time out between exams to wed at the Bexhill Open Air Cathedral in September.
“We always wanted to have an outside wedding and my mum used to go there for prayer time, so she suggested it. When we went to have a look we knew this was the place we wanted to get married,” she said.
“It got a bit crazy because we were both doing uni and we had assignments due the day before. I was really lucky to have a few close friends help me with everything as we handmade most things.”
Nikki and Nick moved to a place near the university and have enjoyed ‘setting up house’ together.
But Nikki admits the engagement wasn’t all smooth sailing.
“We both believe that when you meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, why bother waiting?” she said.
“When it happened, a lot of Nick’s parents’ family and friends thought it was a bit weird. But for me it was natural. People should not judge others if they want to get married young. Every couple is different.”
Now that the wedding bells have rung, the happy couple plans to move to Newcastle so Nick can pursue an education in law. “We may start a family after that,” Nikki said.
