Heavy rain washes away Gympie’s final chances

GYMPIE'S under-19 representative cricket side has lost the Wide Bay Australia shield final without even bowling a single ball.

The Gympie side was due to play Fraser Coast in the decider last Sunday but inclement weather forced officials to cancel the game.

Originally the game was to be played at Hervey Bay but was moved to Maryborough at the last minute.

The constant rain however was enough to waterlog the pitch and the game was called off. The non-event means that Fraser Coast wins on countback.

"It wasn't exactly what we wanted," Gympie captain Brycen Mitchell said. "It is disappointing, we all wanted to actually play in the grand final and win."

Fortunately, Gympie will retain the majority of their squad next year with the focus now switching to club finals.
