Hammers host rivals at home

CONFRONTING defending premiers University last weekend was a great test for the Gympie Hammers rugby union side ahead of hosting arch rivals Fraser Coast Mariners at home today.

The Hammers fought bravely but were outclassed last weekend, limping home with a 46-17 defeat.

But the calibre of the game has the Gympie boys prepared for long-term rivals Fraser Coast today.

Coach David Crowley said he expected a tough battle, particularly after the last time both sides met.

“We won last time in Hervey Bay but it was close a match and we are expecting the same,” he said.

In addition to normal premiership points, both sides will be fighting for the King Family Cup.

The cup is up for grabs each time Gympie and Fraser Coast play and Crowley said his players were determined to retain the prize.

Home ground support is encouraged with the game due to kick off at Albert Park at 3.15pm.
