Hammers feel the love before landmark carnival

RUGBY UNION: The countdown to the Gympie Hammers women's team making yet another milestone is almost over.

Saturday will see the Hammers compete at the invite-only Queensland Country Rugby Union Championship in Bundaberg, a first for any Gympie rugby union team, male or female.

"To just be invited is massive - a lot of the girls have not had this opportunity before,” Hammers' captain Bec Briggs told The Gympie Times ahead of the weekend's carnival.

Such is the confidence in the Gympie squad, the skipper is tipping a finals appearance, despite not knowing the quality of the opposition.

"We will make the finals,” Briggs said.

"We are that confident.

"There is that much trust in each other - we are like a family.

"A lot of work has gone into our team work. We support each other a lot.”

Despite being invited to the carnival, the team has had to raise the majority of the funds to get there themselves.

The cost of playing and travelling to the carnival is steep, and the players have hustled to raise the funds.

Like their on-field performances, gritty determination has lead them to success with tomorrow acting as the last day the public can chip in.

"The support from the community has been amazing,” Briggs said.

"It goes to show how much it means to the community.

"I think it (rugby) is good for Gympie and good for women.”

The Hammers will take some form into the tournament after a 47-17 demolition of Maroochydore at the weekend.
