Hammers boosted by opening victory

IT may have taken six rounds but the wait was worth it for the Gympie Hammers rugby union team last weekend, breaking through to record its first win of the season against Fraser Coast.

There are hopes the winning feeling of the courageous 20-17 defeat of Fraser Coast in Hervey Bay will propel the Hammers to new heights against Nambour at home today.

Coach David Crowley said the win against Fraser Coast was an important breakthrough – and not just because the Gympie boys won.

Leading 17-0 at half time, the Hammers repelled a comeback from Fraser Coast that could have lost them the game.

Today, kick off against Nambour is at 1.30pm for reserve grade and 3pm for A grade at Albert Park.
