WHEN it comes to local tradies they don't come much better than Gympie apprentice Lachlan Kenman.

The young chippie has just been named Sunshine Coast Apprentice of the Year and his employer Mark Buchanan was named the 2013 Sunshine Coast Apprentice Employer of the Year.

Lachlan, who has just finished his apprenticeship, was surprised about the win, saying he didn't expect his name to be called out in front of the 400 people at the prestige event held at Twin Waters.

"I was rapt," Lachlan said.

"It was pretty cool and everyone was telling me how good it is to win the prize."

Lachlan now wants to study to become a builder and further his career in the industry.

In all, Gympie companies performed well.

Hotondo, Kimlin Building and Peter Green won in their housing categories.

Master Builders regional manager Michael Hopkins said Gympie had excelled in 2013, edging out tough competition from the Burnett Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast regions.

"It's great to see local builders being recognised for their skills, innovation and commitment to training," Mr Hopkins said.

Mr Hopkins made special mention of Lachlan.

"Master Builders praises Lachlan's strong work ethic and commitment to the industry, both of which have been demonstrated during his three years working with local builder, Mark Buchanan," Mr Hopkins said.

"Lachlan has worked on numerous projects in Gympie, including new homes, multi-story projects, extensions, bathroom renovations and a removal house.

"Mark Buchanan has shown great commitment to Lachlan during his apprenticeship, and is proud to call him a close mate.

Mark said from day one, Lachlan showed a keenness to learn.

"You could tell that Lachlan was keen to learn as he would be suggesting options or asking questions which assured me that his mind was on the job and he wanted to achieve the best he could," he said.

"Due to this level of work ethic I gained great confidence in Lachlan's ability to comprehend, understand and achieve what I was asking.

"When you have an employee who thinks for himself and you don't feel you need to be watching them all the time it makes a huge difference to your own working day."
